Aegothelidae (owlet-nightjars; class Aves, order Caprimulgiformes) A family of brown-grey, secretive, nocturnal birds, similar to Podargidae (frogmouths) and Caprimulgidae (nightjars), that are insectivorous, with small, broad bills. They possess preen glands. They nest in holes in trees or the ground. There is one genus, Aegotheles, with eight species, found in Australasia (but not in New Zealand).
