angostura bark

angostura bark (ăng´gəstŏŏr´ə, –styŏŏr´ə), bitter bark of either of two South American trees (Galipea officinalis and Cusparia felorifuga) of the rue family. Formerly valued as a tonic and quinine substitute, it is now used in angostura bitters, an aromatic appetizer sometimes added to cocktails.

Angostura

Angostura (family Rutaceae) A genus comprising 30 species, found in tropical America, in which the flowers are sympetalous and zygomorphic. The bark is the basis of Angostura bitters.
