yttrium

yttrium (symbol Y) Silver-grey, metallic element in group III of the periodic table. First isolated in 1828 by German chemist Friedrich Wöhler, it is found with lanthanide elements (rare-earth metals) in monazite sand, bastnasite, and gadolinite. It resembles the lanthanides in its chemistry. Yttrium was found in lunar rock samples collected by the Apollo 11 space mission. Its compounds are used in phosphors and communications devices, such as colour television picture tubes and superconducting ceramics. Properties: at.no. 39; r.a.m. 88.9059; r.d. 4.47; m.p. 1523°C (2773°F); b.p. 3337°C (6039°F); most common isotope Y89 (100%).
