HOROWITZ, MOSES BEN JUDAH

HOROWITZ, MOSES BEN JUDAH (early 19th century), rabbi and preacher. Born in Kharkov, he was elected av bet din in Valachosk in 1813. He wrote a homiletic work, Emek ha-Sidim (Kriz, 1819), containing the sermons he preached on special Sabbaths between the years 1813–18, revealing a knowledge of the siddur of Isaac *Luria. His grandfather, Nathan, who was av bet din in Berdichev, wrote an important book which Moses published as an appendix to his own work. In his book Horowitz states that he also wrote Emek ha-Melekh, a commentary on Esther, Emek Shaveh, Emek Ḥevron, Emek Refa'im, and Emek Yehoshafat, all of which deal with halakhic problems.
