HAVAS, GÉZA

HAVAS, GÉZA (pen name, K. Havas Géza ; 1905–1945), Hungarian journalist, born in Nagykanizsa. In 1936 he joined the review Szép szó, whose editor was the poet Attila József. He chose the Nazi economists as his target and wrote incisive articles against them. He also edited collections of essays on socialism and wrote a study on Magyar lyrics of the 20th century, Új magyar lira (1940). From 1941 he was interned in labor camps and in 1944 was deported to Germany. He died in the concentration camp of Guenskirchen, near *Mauthausen, a few hours before the arrival of the U.S. Army.
