Guttmacher, Manfred
GUTTMACHER, MANFRED
GUTTMACHER, MANFRED (1898–1966), U.S. criminologist and psychiatrist. His career was devoted to the study of the mentally disturbed, maladjusted offender. Born in Baltimore, he graduated from Johns Hopkins University in 1923. From 1930 to 1960 he was chief medical officer of the Supreme Court of Baltimore. He held the rank of colonel in the U.S. Army Medical Corps during World War ii (1942–46), and served as chief psychiatric consultant to the Second Army. During 1948 he served as scientific adviser to the United Nations Social Commission dealing with the causes and prevention of crime and the treatment of offenders. He taught at Johns Hopkins University, the University of Maryland, and at a number of other universities. His works include Sex Offenses (1961), Psychiatry and the Law (1952), and Mind of the Murderer (1960).
