WALUBI. Acronym for Per-WAL-ian Umat Buddha Indonesia, or All-Indonesia Federation of Buddhist Organizations. It was founded in Jogyakarta in 1978 to promote union among Indonesia's 3 million Buddhists. The Federation includes both Theravāda and Mahāyāna Buddhist groups (the former having strong links with Dhammayutika temples in Thailand via the Phra Dhamma-Dūta missionary programme) and Buddhayana, a syncretistic combination of both these branches of Buddhism plus Kasogatan, a local type of Javanese Buddhism. Monks and lay Buddhists are strongly represented in most branches of WALUBI. See also TRIDHARMA.
