Southern Baptist Convention
Southern Baptist Convention. The largest organization of Baptist churches in the USA. It was formed in 1845 following serious division among US Baptists over slavery. Since the 1940s, however, it has spread to all the states (partly on account of its membership among US military families) and has lost a little of its regional identity. In view of its numerical strength and resources, the Convention has considerable influence among Baptists, especially through the Baptist World Alliance.
