Jujukai

Jujukai or jujukinkai (Jap.). The ten main precepts of Mahāyāna Buddhism. There are two sets, exoteric and esoteric. Exoteric: they forbid (i) taking life; (ii) stealing; (iii) unchasteness; (iv) lying; (v) trade in alcohol; (vi) gossip; (vii) praising self and deprecating others; (viii) reluctance in giving help to others; (ix) aggression; (x) slandering the Three Jewels. Esoteric: one vows (i) not to abandon dharma; (ii) not to abandon seeking enlightenment, (iii) not to covet; (iv) not to lack compassion; (v) not to slander any Buddhist teachings; (vi) not to be attached to anything; (vii) not to entertain false views; (viii) to encourage all to seek enlightenment; (ix) to instruct adherents of Hīnayāna; (x) to practise responsive charity to bodhisattvas.
