Indian Ecumenical Conference
Indian Ecumenical Conference. A movement for spiritual renewal among N. American Indians. The meetings began on the Crow Reservation, Montana, in 1970, with those attending coming from Alaska to Florida, and from many religions (Catholic, Protestant, Bahāʾī, traditional and the new religions of Handsome Lake, and the Native American Church). Attitudes have ranged from emphasis on ‘Red Power’ and anti-white, anti-Christian feelings, to more positive and forward-looking relationships with Christianity and W. culture.
