Tryon, Dwight William

Dwight William Tryon (trī´ən), 1849–1925, American landscape painter, b. Hartford, Conn., studied in Paris under C. F. Daubigny and Jacquesson de la Chevreuse. Upon his return to the United States he became established as an artist and teacher in New York City. He later taught at Smith for 38 years and donated to the college the art gallery that bears his name. He painted rosy, atmospheric landscapes. Large collections of his work are at Smith and in the Freer Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.
