Świnoujście

Świnoujście (shfēnôōō´ēshchĕ), Ger. Swinemünde, town (1993 est. pop. 46,300), Zachodniopomorskie prov., NW Poland, on the island of Usedom, at the mouth of the Świna River. It is the outer port for Szczecin and a fishing center and seaside resort. The first mention of the town dates from 1181. In 1765, the town became part of the Prussian province of Pomerania; it passed to Poland in 1945. During World War II the town was a German naval base.
