Orangeburg

Orangeburg, city (1990 pop. 13,739), seat of Orangeburg co., central S.C., on the North Fork of the Edisto River; settled 1732, inc. as a city 1883. It is the trade and processing center of a cotton and agricultural area with textile, clothing, and food-distribution industries. Yard and gardening products, ball and roller bearings, automotive parts, electronics, and chemicals are also produced. Orangeburg was a planned settlement established by German-Swiss immigrants who had free grants of land. It is the seat of South Carolina State Univ. and Claflin Univ. Of interest are the Edisto gardens and the Donald Bruce House (c.1735).
