Malenkov, Georgi Maksimilianovich

Malenkov, Georgi Maksimilianovich (1902–88) Soviet statesman, prime minister (1953–55). Malenkov succeeded Stalin as prime minister and leader of the Communist Party. Nikita Khrushchev succeeded Malenkov as party leader and, in 1955, he also lost the premiership. Implicated in an unsuccessful coup against Khrushchev in 1957, he was sent to manage a power station in Siberia. He was expelled by the party in 1961.
