Leggett, Sir Anthony James
Sir Anthony James Leggett, 1938–, British physicist, Ph.D. Oxford, 1964. He was a professor at Sussex Univ., England, from 1967 to 1983, when he joined the faculty at the Univ. of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. Leggett was a co-recipient, with Vitaly Ginzburg and Alexei Abrikosov, of the 2003 Nobel Prize in Physics for making pioneering contributions to the theory of superfluids (see superfluidity). In the 1970s Leggett elucidated how atoms interact and are ordered in the superfluid state, when a liquid's viscosity becomes zero and the liquid exhibits unusual properties.
