Gunib

Gunib (gōōnyēp´), village, SE European Russia, in Dagestan. Now a mountain resort in the North Caucasus, it was historically important as a natural fortress during the Caucasian wars of the 19th cent. The imam Shamyl, leader of the Circassian tribes, made his last stand against the Russians at Gunib, where he was captured in 1859.
