Fitzgibbon, James
James Fitzgibbon, 1780–1863, Canadian soldier, b. Ireland. As an officer in the War of 1812, he distinguished himself in the battle of Beaver Dams (1813) on the Niagara frontier. Warned by Laura Secord of a surprise American attack, he forced the surrender of the American force, which was considerably larger than his. Appointed assistant adjutant general (1822) of the militia of Upper Canada, he was adjutant general of the defending loyalist force at Toronto in the rebellion of 1837.
