Smithfield (district, London, England)

Smithfield, district of the City of London, England. Beginning in the 12th cent., it was used for fairs, markets, jousts, and executions. During the reign of Queen Mary I (1553–58), Protestants were executed there. London's central meat market is in Smithfield.

Smithfield

Smithfield a locality in London, long the site of a cattle and horse market and then a meat-market; the name was originally Smethefield, from smethe ‘smooth’. In the 16th century, it was also the place where heretics were executed at the stake.

Smithfield (town, United States)

Smithfield, town (1990 pop. 19,163), Providence co., N R.I.; set off from Providence and inc. 1731. Long a textile town, it now has diversified industries. It was settled early in the 18th cent., mainly by Quakers. Bryant Univ. is there.
