Smits van Waesberghe, Jos(eph Maria Antonius Franciscus)

Smits van Waesberghe, Jos(eph Maria Antonius Franciscus), prominent Dutch musicologist; b. Breda, North Brabant, April 18, 1901; d. Amsterdam, Oct. 9, 1986. He studied at several Jesuit seminaries, and became a priest. In addition to his training in philosophy (1922–26) and theology (1930–35), he also studied music with Louis van Tulder, Marius Monnik-endam, and Johan Winnubst. He taught at Canisius Coll. in Nijmegen (1935–37), Ignatius Coll. in Amsterdam (1937–43), the Rotterdam Cons. (1939–43), the Amsterdam Cons. (1944–46), and the Univ. of Amsterdam, where he was a Privatdozent in music and medieval theory (1945–57) and a prof. (1957–71). He served as general secretary of the Koninklije Nederlandse Toonkunstenaars Vereniging (1945–48), founder-secretary of the Nederlandse Toonkunstenaars Raad (from 1948), and president of the Gregoriusvereniging (1958–67).
