Vitória
Vitória, capital of the Brazilian state of Espírito Santo since 1823. A port city (2005 population 313,300) Vitória is located on the island of Vitória in the bay of Espírito Santo. Founded in 1535 by Vasco Fernandes Coutinho, the city was originally named Vila de Nossa Senhora da Vitória. On the periphery of the city is Tubarão, Brazil's principal port for iron ore exports. Railways connect Vitória to the mines of Minas Gerais and the city of Rio de Janeiro.
