State of the Union message
State of the Union message a yearly address delivered in January by the President of the US to Congress, giving the administration's view of the state of the nation and plans for legislation. The expression itself is recorded only from 1945, but the requirement for such an address is enshrined in the Constitution of 1787. Also called State of the Union address.
