Nonsuch, treaty of
Nonsuch, treaty of, 1585. After years of characteristic hesitation, in August 1585 Elizabeth took a momentous decision. The fall of Antwerp persuaded her that, without aid, the Dutch rebels would be crushed by Philip II of Spain. Putting aside the temptation of sovereignty, she agreed, at Nonsuch palace, to place 7,000 men in the field at her own cost. Leicester was put in charge. Philip's response was the preparation of a great Armada.
