Hamilton, Sir James, of Finnart
Hamilton, Sir James, of Finnart (c.1500–40). An illegitimate son of 1st earl of Arran and brother of the archbishop of St Andrews, Hamilton became a successful architect. As a youth he was impetuous and aggressive, taking part in many affrays. He was a close companion of the young king James V, and was employed in the renovation of the palaces of Falkland and Linlithgow. In 1540 he was suddenly accused of plotting to murder the king and executed in haste. It has been suggested that the king may have been anxious to take possession of the great wealth which Hamilton had accumulated.
