Griqualand, East and West. Griqualand West, an arid region occupied by the Griqua people, was annexed to Cape Colony in 1871 after diamonds had been found there. It is south of the Kalahari desert. The chief town is Kimberley. It now forms part of Cape Province (South Africa). Griqualand East was annexed to Cape Colony in 1880, but is now divided between the Transkei and Natal.
