Gloucester, Richard de Clare, 5th earl of (1222–62). Succeeding his father in the earldom at the age of 8, he became a ward of Hubert de Burgh, whose daughter he married. His estates were on the Welsh border and in Ireland. His political course appears fluctuating. In 1258 he joined the barons trying to restrain the conduct of Henry III but he died before the civil war began and was buried at Tewkesbury. Matthew of Paris lamented that his great talents were ruined by avarice.
