Derby, diocese of. The see, roughly conterminous with Derbyshire, was created in 1927 out of the diocese of Southwell, where the ecclesiastical union in 1884 of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire, formerly in the Lincoln and Lichfield dioceses, had not been a success. The cathedral is the former parish church, built in the classical style (1723–5), though the tower is 15th cent. and the reredos dates from 1965.
