Crediton, diocese of

Crediton, diocese of. Carved out of the Sherborne bishopric in 909, it initially covered all Devon and Cornwall, though from 931 to 1027 St Germans was the separate see for Cornwall. In 1050 Leofric moved the bishopric to Exeter, in obedience to Leo IX's command for sees to be in larger towns. Crediton was the birthplace of Boniface (680), the missionary to Frisia and Germany.
