Bradford, diocese of. The see was created in 1919 out of sections of the Wakefield and Ripon dioceses, to accommodate the increasing population in this heartland of the woollen industry. It comprises parts of western Yorkshire and a small area of Lancashire. Among notable bishops were A. W. F. Blunt (1931–55), whose address to his diocesan conference on 1 December 1936 began the chain reaction culminating in Edward VIII's abdication. Roy Williamson (1984–91) was noted for his interfaith work and community relations. The cathedral is the former 15th-cent. parish church with 18th-cent. fittings and notable modern extensions (1953–65).
