Bignor. Roman villa. Situated on the edge of the Weald to the north of Chichester, the villa at Bignor was uncovered by the antiquary Samuel Lysons (also responsible for the uncovering of Woodchester) between 1812 and 1820. Starting from modest beginnings at the turn of the 1st and 2nd cents., the villa had developed by the middle of the 4th cent. into one of the largest and most palatial in Britain. It is particularly noteworthy for the number and quality of its mosaics.
