Västerås Inland port at the mouth of the River Svartan on Lake Malaren, e Sweden. Founded in 1100, it was an important medieval city and was the scene of several diets, including the Diet of Västerås Recess in 1527, which formed the Lutheran State Church, and the diet of 1544, which made the Swedish throne hereditary.
