Salmond, Alex ( Alexander Elliott Anderson) (1954– ) Scottish politician, national convener (1990–2000) of the Scottish National Party (SNP). Salmond was elected to Parliament in 1987. Despite pressing for full independence, he supported the devolved assembly for Scotland in 1998.
