Hoffmann, E.T.A. ( Ernst Theodor Amadeus) (1776–1822) German Romantic writer, musician, and music critic. He wrote many fantastic gothic stories, several of which later formed the basis for the opera The Tales of Hoffmann (1881) by Offenbach.
