Burra, Edward John (1905–76) English painter. Fascinated with the urban life of Harlem, New York, and the Marseilles docks, some of Burra's most famous paintings are the Harlem scenes (1933–34). In the mid-1930s, he turned to fantastic imagery, akin to surrealism. His later paintings, such as Soldiers and War in the Sun, were provoked by the tragedies of the Spanish Civil War and World War II.
