Ballard, J.G.
Ballard, J.G. ( James Graham) (1930– ) British novelist and short-story writer, b. China. Ballard is best known for his highly stylized science fiction. Novels such as The Wind from Nowhere (1962), The Drought (1965), The Crystal World (1966), and Crash (1973, filmed 1999) explore psychological reactions to catastrophic situations. Empire of the Sun (1984, filmed 1987) explores his childhood experiences in a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp. Its sequel was The Kindness of Women (1991). Other novels include Cocaine Nights (1996) and Super-Cannes (2000).
