Title of Award: Defense Intelligence Agency Undergraduate Training Assistance Program Area, Field, or Subject: Computer and information sciences; Geography; International affairs and relations; Political science Level of Education for which Award is Granted: Undergraduate Number Awarded: Only a few are awarded each year. Funds Available: Students accepted into this program receive tuition (up to $18,000 per year) at an accredited college or university selected by the student and endorsed by the sponsor; reimbursement for books and needed supplies; an annual salary to cover college room and board expenses and for summer employment; and a position at the sponsoring agency after graduation. Recipients must work for DIA after college graduation for at least 1 and a half times the length of study. For participants who leave DIA earlier than scheduled, the agency arranges for payments to reimburse DIA for the total cost of education (including the employee's pay and allowances). Duration: 4 years.

Eligibility Requirements: This program is open to women, minorities, and individuals with disabilities who are graduating high school seniors and interested in majoring in 1 of the following fields in college: geography, foreign area studies, international relations, or political science. Applicants must have a high school GPA of 3.0 or higher, have an above-average score on the SAT or ACT, be able to demonstrate financial need (household income ceiling of $65,000 for a family of 4 or $80,000 for a family of 5 or more), be U.S. citizens and from a family of U.S. citizens, and demonstrate leadership abilities through extracurricular activities, civic involvement, volunteer work, or part-time employment. Additional Information: Recipients are provided a challenging summer internship and guaranteed a job at the agency in their field of study upon graduation. They must have completed at least 12 undergraduate units with a GPA of 3.0 or higher and be majoring in the arts, including (but not limited to) media, film, performing arts, communications, and writing. Along with their application, they must submit a 3-page concept paper describing the art project for which they are seeking funding, a portfolio of their work, and 600-word essays on 1) how their Hispanic heritage, family upbringing, and/or role models have influenced their personal long-term goals; 2) how they contribute to their community and what they have learned from their experiences; and 3) an academic challenge they have faced and how they have overcome it. Title of Award: Irene Ryan Acting Scholarships Area, Field, or Subject: Performing arts Level of Education for which Award is Granted: Undergraduate Number Awarded: The number of regional winners varies each year; at the national festival "Evening of Scenes," 2 performers receive scholarships. Several other awards are also presented. Funds Available: Regional winners receive $500 scholarships and payment of expenses (transportation, lodging, and per diem) to attend the national festival. National winners receive $2,500 scholarships; the best partner receives the Kingsley Colton Award. All scholarship funds are paid directly to the institutions designated by the recipients and may be used for any field of study. Duration: The competition is held annually.

Eligibility Requirements: Eligible are students enrolled in an accredited junior or senior college in the United States or in countries contiguous to the continental United States. Participants must appear as actors in plays produced by their college and entered in 1 of the 8 regional festivals of the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival (KCACTF). Undergraduate students must be carrying at least 6 semester hours, graduate students must be enrolled in at least 3 semester hours, and continuing part-time students must be enrolled in a regular degree or certificate program. From each of the regional festivals, 2 winners and their acting partners are invited to the national festival at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. to participate in an "Evening of Scenes." Scholarships are awarded to outstanding student performers at each regional festival and from the "Evening of Scenes." Deadline for Receipt: The regional festivals are held in January and February of each year; the national festival is held in April of each year. Application deadlines are set within each region. Eligibility Requirements: To enter an official Miss America Preliminary Pageant, candidates must meet certain basic requirements and agree to abide by all the rules of the local, state, and national Miss America Pageants. Among the qualifications required are that the applicant be female, between the ages of 17 and 24, a resident of the town or state in which they first compete, in good health, of good moral character, and a citizen of the United States. On the basis of the videotapes, judges select award recipients to come to Miami for the final competitions. They must submit audio or videotapes; based on those tapes, finalists are invited to a live competition in June at the Donna Reed Festival and Workshops for the Performing Arts in Denison, Iowa. Selection is based on talent. Grades and financial need are not considered. U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status is required. Separate award are presented to residents of Iowa and to residents of Crawford County, Iowa. Deadline for Receipt: February of each year. Additional Information: The widower and friends of the actress Donna Reed established this foundation in 1987, the year after her death. It is based in, and the workshops are held in, Denison, Iowa, Donna Reed's birthplace. To provide forgivable loans for study and work experience to undergraduate and graduate students interested in preparing for a career with the Department of Commerce.

Title of Award: Ronald H. Brown Commercial Service Fellowships Area, Field, or Subject: International affairs and relations Level of Education for which Award is Granted: Four Year College, Graduate Number Awarded: Approximately 10 every other year. Funds Available: The award includes tuition, room, board, and mandatory fees during the final 2 years of undergraduate study and the first year of graduate work. The cost of books and 1 round trip are reimbursed. The graduate institution provides similar support during the second year of graduate study, depending upon financial need. For the summer institute and the internships, travel expenses and stipends are paid. Duration: 4 years: the final 2 years of undergraduate study and the first 2 years of graduate work (provided the student maintains a GPA of 3.0 or higher).

Eligibility Requirements: This program is open to U.S. citizens in the sophomore year of undergraduate study at an accredited college or university with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. Applicants must plan to work on a graduate degree in the field of international affairs and prepare for a career in the Commercial Service. Selection is based on strength of undergraduate course work, financial need, college honors and awards, and participation and leadership in extracurricular and community activities. Deadline for Receipt: February of alternate years. Additional Information: During the summer between their junior and senior years, fellows attend a 7-week summer institute at 1 of 5 participating graduate schools of public policy and international affairs. They take courses in economics, calculus, and policy analysis, along with exercises to develop oral and written communication skills. While in graduate school, students work part time for the Department of Commerce, and during the summer between the first and second year of graduate school they are assigned to an overseas post. After completion of their graduate studies, they receive a 1-year overseas assignment. This program is funded by the Commerce Department and administered by the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation. Fellows must commit to a minimum of 4 and a half years of service in an appointment as a Commercial Service Officer following the second year of graduate study. Candidates who do not successfully complete the program and Commercial Service entry requirements may be subject to a reimbursement obligation to the Department of Commerce.

Title of Award: Horizons Foundation Scholarship Program Area, Field, or Subject: Business administration; Computer and information sciences; Economics; Engineering; History; International affairs and relations; Law; Mathematics and mathematical sciences; Military science and education; National security; Physics; Political science Level of Education for which Award is Granted: Four Year College, Graduate, Professional Number Awarded: Varies each year. Recently, 8 of these scholarships were awarded. Since the program was established, 75 women have received nearly $49,000 in support. Funds Available: Stipends range up to $1,000. Duration: 1 year; renewable.

Eligibility Requirements: This program is open to women who are already working in national security fields as well as women planning such careers. Applicants must 1) be currently enrolled at an accredited college or university, either full time or part time, as graduate students or upperdivision undergraduates; 2) demonstrate financial need; 3) be U.S. citizens; 4) have a GPA of 3.25 or higher; and 5) demonstrate interest in preparing for a career related to national security. The preferred fields of study include business, computer science, economics, engineering, government relations, international relations, law, mathematics, military history, political science, physics, and security studies; others are considered if the applicant can demonstrate relevance to a career in national security or defense. Selection is based on academic achievement, participation in defense and national security activities, field of study, work experience, statements of objectives, recommendations, and financial need. Deadline for Receipt: June of each year for fall semester; October of each year for spring semester.
