American Society for Microbiology International Fellowships for Africa (Postdoctorate/Fellowship)

Purpose: To promote American/Asian collaborations in microbiological research and training. Focus: Microbiology. Qualif.: Applicants must be members of ASM or any other national microbiological society; must actively involved in research in the microbiological sciences; must have obtained or be in the process of obtaining masters, Ph.D. or other equivalent academic degree within the last five years; must be nationals of non-developed Asian countries; and must be proficient in the use of the English language. Criteria: Recipients are selected based on academic excellence of the applicant; depth of the applicant's research experience; quality and originality of work proposed during the fellowship; and relevance of the work proposed.

American Society for Microbiology International Fellowships for Latin America (Postdoctorate/Fellowship)

Purpose: To promote American/Latin American collaborations in microbiological research and training. Focus: Latin American Studies. Qualif.: Applicants must be members of ASM or any other national microbiological society; must be actively involved in research in the microbiological sciences; must have obtained, or be in a process of obtaining masters, Ph.D. or other equivalent academic degree within the last five years; must be nationals of Latin American countries; must be proficient in the use of the English language. Criteria: Preference will be given to applicants who can prove three years of membership in ASM or any other national microbiological society; and who have not previously had the opportunity to travel to a facility in another country Number Awarded: 5. To Apply: Applicants must complete the application form; must submit an updated resume; copy honors and awards received; statement of career plans; potential collaborations and proposed research plans; budget; certificates; and letters of reference from academic advisors and/or supervisors. Deadline: April 15.

American Society for Microbiology Undergraduate Research Fellowships (Undergraduate/Fellowship)

Purpose: To support programs for education, training, and public information. Focus: General Studies. Qualif.: Applicants must be enrolled as full-time matriculating undergraduate in an accredited U.S. institution; must be involved in a research project; must have ASM members in their home institutions willing to serve as a mentor; must not have receive any financial support for research. Criteria: Recipients are selected based on academic achievement; relevant career objectives; potential contribution to overall project outcome; personal motivation to participate in the program; and achievement in previous research experiences.

Funds Avail.: $4,000; $1,000-travel support. To Apply: Applicants must submit a complete application form. Deadline: February 1.

ASM/CCID Program in Infectious Disease and Public Health Microbiology (Postdoctorate/Fellowship)

Purpose: To support the development of new approaches, methodologies, and knowledge in infectious disease prevention and control in areas within the public health mission of the CDC. Focus: Microbiology. Qualif.: Applicants must have earned their doctorate degree or completed primary residency within three years from proposed start date; may not have a faculty position or enrolled in a graduate degree program during the fellowship. Criteria: Recipients are selected based on scientific merit and training potential of the research proposal; training resources; and have significance with the Centers for Diseases public health mission.

Funds Avail.: $42,188; $3,000-health benefit; $500-$2,000 for professional development. To Apply: Applicants must fill out the application form. Deadline: January 15.

Congressional Science Fellowships (Postdoctorate/Fellowship)

Purpose: To broaden the perspective of both the scientific and governmental communities regarding the value of science-government interaction; to enable more effective use in government of scientific knowledge; and to provide experience to scientists seeking careers involving public use of technical information. Focus: Science. Qualif.: Applicants must be citizens of the United States; must be members of ASM for at least one year; must have completed their Ph.D. by the time the fellowship begins; must show competence in some aspect of microbiology; must have broad background in science and technology; must have interest and experience in applying scientific knowledge toward the solution of social problems; must be articulate, literate, adaptable, interested in public policy problems; must able to work with a variety of people from diverse professional backgrounds. Criteria: Recipients are selected based on the result of the interview.

Funds Avail.: $55,000. To Apply: Applicants must submit a letter indicating a desire to apply; three letters of references; and 1,000-word statement about the qualifications and career goals. Deadline: February 22.

Microbiology Undergraduate Research Fellowships (Undergraduate/Fellowship)

Purpose: To increase the number of underrepresented undergraduate students who have demonstrated the ability to pursue graduate careers in microbiology. Focus: Microbiology. Qualif.: Applicants must be enrolled as full-time matriculating undergraduate in an accredited U.S. institution; must be either freshmen with college level research experience or sophomores, juniors, or seniors who will not graduate before the completion date of the summer program; must be members of underrepresented group of microbiology; must have taken introductory courses in biology, chemistry and preferably microbiology prior to submission of the application; must have strong interests in obtaining a Ph.D. or M.D/Ph.D. in the microbiological sciences; must have laboratory research experience. Criteria: Recipients are selected based on academic achievement; relevant career objectives; potential contribution to overall project outcome; personal motivation to participate in the program; achievement in previous research experiences.

Funds Avail.: $3,500-student; $850-lodging; $500-roundtrip travel; $1,000 travel support. To Apply: Applicants must submit a complete application form. Deadline: February 1.

Microbiology Undergraduate Teaching Fellowships (Undergraduate/Fellowship)

Purpose: To support students who are interested in a career as an elementary or secondary school science teacher. Focus: Education. Qualif.: Applicants must be enrolled as full-time matriculating undergraduate in an accredited U.S. institution; must be involved in educational outreach project; must be a science major interested in education; must have strong faculty ASM members in their home institutions willing to serve as a co-mentor; must have not receive any financial support for the project during the fellowship. Criteria: Recipients are selected based on academic achievement; relevant career objectives; potential contribution to overall project outcome; personal motivation to participate in the program; achievement in previous teaching experience.

Funds Avail.: $2,500-student; $500-supplies and instructional materials; $1,000-travel support. To Apply: Applicants must submit six copies of complete application form. Deadline: April 1.

Robert D. Watkins Graduate Research Fellowships (Postdoctorate/Fellowship)

Purpose: To increase the number of underrepresented groups completing doctoral degrees in the microbiological

sciences. Focus: Microbiology. Qualif.: Applicants must be formally admitted to a doctoral program in the microbiological sciences in an accredited U.S. institution; have successfully completed the first year of the graduate program; have successfully completed all graduate course work requirements for the doctoral degree by the date of activation of the fellowship; must be student members of ASM; must be mentored by ASM members; must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Criteria: Recipients are selected base on academic achievement; evidence of successful research plan developed in collaboration with research advisor/mentor; relevant career goals in the microbiological sciences; involvement in activities that serve the needs of underrepresented groups.

Funds Avail.: $63,000. To Apply: Applicants must submit a three letters of recommendation; and official transcript from all colleges and universities attended. Deadline: May 1.
