Hodges, William

Hodges, William (1744–97). English painter. He specialized in topographical views, and accompanied Captain James Cook (1728–79) on his expedition to the South Seas (1772–5) as the official artist. Under the aegis of Warren Hastings (1732–1818) he went to India in 1779 and published Select Views in India (1785–8) followed by Travels in India (1793) which had a considerable impact, popularizing Hindoo and Indian architecture.
