Cataneo, Pietro (c.1510–c.1574). Sienese architect and military engineer, possibly a pupil of Peruzzi. He was the author of I Quattro Primi Libri di Architettura, published in Venice (1554), later expanded with four more books, and brought out in Venice in 1573 as L'Architettura, in which civil and military architecture were considered together, and the city plan was revealed as part of a defence system associated with the fortifications. Cataneo saw the design of towns as the task of the architect, emphasizing the importance of geometry in layouts.
