altar-tomb. Monumental tomb-chest, or high tomb, resembling an altar, but never used as such, sometimes supporting recumbent effigies or with memorial brasses on top, and occasionally embellished with weepers in niches around its sides. Altar-tombs are often protected by ornate canopies.
