Mendel, Gregor Johann
Mendel, Gregor Johann (1822–84) An Austrian Augustinian monk who is credited with founding the science of
genetics, based on his experiments breeding peas in the monastery garden at Brünn (now Brno). These led him to formulate the laws of heredity (see
MENDEL'S LAWS) which he presented to the Naturforschenden Verein (Natural History Society) in Brünn and, in 1866, published as an article (‘Versuche über Pflanzenhybriden’) in the Society's transactions. His work was not widely recognized until 1900, when similar results were obtained by other workers who, searching the literature, came across Mendel's original paper.
