viola d'amore (It.). Love-viol. Bowed str. instr. of the viol family but without frets and played under the chin. Larger than modern viola, with 7 bowed gut str. and 7 sympathetic str. (which give the instr. its name) which vibrate to the sound of the stopped strs. Particularly beautiful sound.
