b Linares, 1893;
d Madrid, 1987). Sp. guitarist and composer. Début in Granada 1909. Madrid 1912, Paris 1924, NY 1928. More than any other man responsible for revival of interest in guitar as ‘classical’ instr. Works specially comp. for him by Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Ponce, etc. Created Marquis of Salobreña by King Juan Carlos, 1981. Segovia int. gui. comp. founded 1981. Transcr. works by Bach and others for guitar. Continued world tours well into his 80s. Wrote pieces for guitar.
