d Amersham, 1977). Ger.-born Austrian baritone. Opera début Dresden 1925 (Herald in
Lohengrin). Member, Dresden Opera 1925–37, then Vienna Opera until early 1970s. CG début 1934 singing there each year to 1939 and 1949–53. Salzburg Fest. début 1938; NY Met 1950–6; Bayreuth 1943, 1944, 1956. Outstanding in Verdi roles, but best known for his Wagner parts (Sachs, Wotan, Dutchman) and as Barak in
Die Frau ohne Schatten. Created title-role in
Dantons Tod (Salzburg 1947), and sang Jupiter in
Die Liebe der Danae (Salzburg 1952). Settled in Eng.
