Pierson, Henry Hugo
Pierson, Henry Hugo [ Henry Hugo Pearson], (b Oxford, 1815; d Leipzig, 1873). Ger. composer and teacher of Eng. origin. Lived in Ger. 1839–44. In 1846 appointed prof. of mus., Edinburgh Univ., resigning after a few months to settle in Ger. Wrote several operas, prod. Brno (1845) and Hamburg (1848), oratorios, incl. Jerusalem (Norwich, 1852), music for Goethe's Faust, Part II (Hamburg 1854), sym.-poem Macbeth (1859), part-song Ye Mariners of England, and other pieces. His songs are regarded as of considerable interest and originality.
