Hoffnung, Gerard

Hoffnung, Gerard (b Berlin, 1925; d Hampstead, 1959). Ger.-born artist, humorist, and tuba-player. Settled in Brit. as child. Contrib. as free-lance artist to various publications from 1940. Made series of illustrations, 1949, to Ravel's L'Enfant et les sortilèges. Founded Hoffnung Mus. Fests. at which various witty mus. parodies were perf. Drew series of amusing drawings of mus. subjects. Soloist in London, 1958, in Vaughan Williams's tuba conc.
