Balling, Michael (b Heidingsfeld-am-Main, 1866; d Darmstadt, 1925). Ger. conductor who began as violist. Founded mus. sch. in NZ, 1892. Violist in Mainz, Schwerin, and Bayreuth. Ass. cond. at Bayreuth, 1896–1902, and cond. Der Ring, Tristan und Isolde, and Parsifal (his début) 1904–25. Cond. Karlsruhe Opera 1903–9. Cond. The Ring in Eng. with Denhof Co., Edinburgh, 1910. Cond. Hallé Orch., 1912–14; mus. dir. Darmstadt from 1919. Ed. of Breitkopf & Härtel Wagner Edition from 1912.
