International Code of Botanical Nomenclature
International Code of Botanical Nomenclature A set of rules for the formal naming of plants, accepted by botanists, in which the underlying principle is the allocation of a single, unambiguous name to each
taxon. The Code comprises a set of 6 Principles to guide those who are selecting a new name, 75 Articles, and a number of Recommendations. Observance of the Articles is mandatory, but not of the Recommendations. This section is followed by translations in French and German and appendixes listing conserved names. The starting-point for naming plants is taken as
Species Plantarum, published by
Linnaeus in 1753; fungi, fossil plants, and bacteria start from different dates and authorities. The Code allows for the naming of
cultivars.
