anaemia A shortage of red
blood cells, leading to pallor and shortness of breath, especially on exertion. Most commonly due to a dietary deficiency of
iron, or excessive blood losses resulting in iron losses greater than can be met from the diet. Other dietary deficiencies can also result in anaemia, including deficiency of
vitamin B12 or
folic acid (megaloblastic anaemia),
vitamin E (haemolytic anaemia), and rarely
vitamin C or
vitamin B6.
