liar a liar ought to have a good memory proverbial saying, mid 16th century; 1st century ad in Latin, in the writings of the rhetorician Quintilian (c.35–c.96 ad).
liar paradox the paradox involved in a speaker's statement that he or she is lying or is a (habitual) liar, as in the statement by a Cretan that all Cretans are liars; by this definition, if he is a Cretan, then what he says cannot be true, and Cretans are honest.
