Liatoshinsky, Boris (Nikolaievich)

Liatoshinsky, Boris (Nikolaievich), significant Ukrainian composer and pedagogue; b. Zhitomir, Jan. 3,1895; d. Kiev, April 15,1968. He studied jurisprudence at the Univ. of Kiev, simultaneously taking lessons in composition at the Kiev Cons, with Gliere, graduating in 1919. He was an instructor (1919–35) and then a prof. (1935–68) at the Kiev Cons.; also taught at the MoscowCons. (1936–37; 1941–43). Liatoshinsky was awarded State Prizes in 1946 and 1952. His style of composition followed the broad outlines of national music, with numerous thematic allusions to folk songs.
